Preparation of Base Documents for care of Christian Art

Introduction: It is perhaps time to arrest the deterioration and ultimate loss of the objects of Christian art either in collections, homes, and parishes. These objects could well be the ones that are even to this day being used in day to day rituals and prayer. These could be paintings, manuscripts, vestments, chalices, decorative wood, sculptures, relics etc. In order to address this, a five day initiation workshop on preparation of base documents for care of Christian art was conducted.

Objective: At the end of this five day workshop, each participant group was able to prepare the framework of a series of base documents for the care of Christian art, with special reference to their own collections.

Topics of this programme:

  • Overview of the dispersion and the issues that accost Ecclesiastical art in Goa.
  • Terminologies related to Christian art
  • An understanding of the Material and Technology of various types of sacred, ritual objects
  • Understanding deterioration and Preparation of condition assessment reports
  • Care of Objects: Handling, maintenance, storage, display, conservation and restoration
  • Equal time dedicated to theory and practical exercises

Participants:  Functionaries of Churches, collections, museums etc
                   One participant was a senior person who stayed for at least the first day.

                  The other participant was someone from the institution who could actually help in the care of the sacred collections and of ritual objects.

Fees: Gratis, as the event is supported by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Museum of Christian Art, Goa, and CSMVS
